For the purposes of this series of articles I have created a simple project based on the creation of a working prototype of "some device". What's in the Modelīuilding a project model is an iterative process - one that is often as much technique as it is procedure. The most popular tools for creating these models are Microsoft Project and Primavera P6. While plans tend to be rather static and prescriptive, models are often better defined and more detailed examples of the "what", usually the "when" and hopefully the "who." Project models - unlike project plans - are "live" documents capable of being easily updated to reflect changes or status. But did you ever consider that the "plan" actually evolves at some point into a model of the project? We use the PMBOK and religiously follow the template for creating the various project planning documents. Most project managers are used to making project plans.
